Manchester

Now Pittsburgh district is changing more rapidly than the city’s North Side. Consider the additions in this decade alone: new baseball and football stadiums for the Pirates and Steelers; new regional headquarters buildings for three major corporations: a new hotel with two more in the planning stage; two new parking garages; a wide array of new dining and entertainment options; and, to be operational in 2009, Pittsburgh’s only casino gambling facility and the northward expansion of the city’s light rail transportation system.  Concentrated in an area that has been branded as the North Shore, these development projects – completed or underway – have met a decades-long planning objective by functioning as an extension of the downtown business district located just across the Allegheny River.

Fourth River Development principal Mark Schneider has played a leading role in the North Side’s economic resurgence.  He served as chairman both of the Stadium Authority of Pittsburgh and the Sports and Exhibition Authority of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, the two organizations which planned and managed much of the expansion activity described above. Currently, his firm is securing financing for a 26-home, traditional neighborhood addition to the Manchester district immediately adjacent to the North Shore location.  The homes, to be sold at market value, will be built on a five-acre brownfield site and will reflect the decidedly urban character of the community that surrounds it.  The project was commissioned by the Manchester Citizen Corporation which obtained start-up public funding for its purpose.
